Nuukasta

Nuuka on linjaukseltaan valtaosaksi työlinjainen. äitinsä on puhdas ISDS-linjan koira, taustalla pelkästään Iso-Britanniasta kotoisin olevia koiria, kun taas isänsä taustalla on mielenkiintoinen sekoitus eurooppalaisia työlinjoja; brittiläisten lisäksi myös tanskalaisia, norjalaisia sekä alankomaalaisia. Tigerin takaa tulee myös yksi näyttelylinjainen koira seitsemännessä polvessa. Tämä koira tulee siis sijoittumaan Nuukan pentueen yhdeksänteen polveen, joten puhun huolettomasti pentueen olevan työlinjainen.

Äitinsä puolelta ei löydy hirveästi nimekkäitä, titteleillä varustettuja koiria. Hyviä periyttäjiä kuitenkin on, kuten Int & Welsh Br Ch Moss (ISDS 188389), Sadghyl Pip Me to Comebye, Canen Spangle, Canen Baz sekä Deveron Wisp. Näistä linjoista on tullut paljon pidettyä harrastus- ja työkoiria. Possun isällä on hyväksytty Norjan paimennustesti, verrannollinen meidän PPR:ään tai Ruotsin Gk Vallh PR:ään.

Titteleiden perässä olevat voivat luoda katseensa Nuukan isän Tigerin sukutauluun, jossa jo lähisuvussa on mielettömästi menestyneitä koiria; Nuukan isänisä NO & SE & POHJ & KANS TVA, Norjan Tokomestari ’09 Pluto (N09848/04) on Norjan tokomaajoukkueessa useita vuosia edustanut hieno uros. Pluton emonemonisä on Wel Nat Ch ’85 ja Wel Dr Ch ’87 Ben (ISDS 129820).

Nuukan isänemo Team Stenmann Amazing Mayzee Lou taas on ISDS rekisteröity meriitin kautta, ja sillä on tanskalaiset paimentittelit HYRDPR1 ja HYRDPR2. Mayzee toimii pääosin paimenkoirana pikkutilalla. Mayzeen isä on pidetty Bob (ISDS 269836), ja tämän isä jo legendan maineeseen noussut useana vuonna Alankomaiden kansalliseksi mestariksi paimennuksessa (NL Nat Ch) sijoittunut, ja vuoden 2005 Continental mestariksi tituleerautunut Glen (ISDS 244489). Bobin emonisä taas on Wel Nat Ch ’98 Lad (ISDS 214439).

Suvussa on jonkin verran havaittu epilepsiaa. Hieman kauempana suvussa esiintyvät epileptikkokoirat on esitelty edellisen pentueen sivuilla , joten keskityn tässä kertomaan lähempänä suvussa esiintyvät tapaukset.

Kun ensimmäinen Dwylch-pentue oli vuoden, sain kuulla, että Possun 3/4 veli My Trusted Friend Dear Roy (Canen Kane x Astra Rikky, joka on siskopuoli Possun emo Lizille) on jättänyt kaksi epileptikkopentua. Toinen on Luna Tale Nice Jari, emonsa Luna Tale Inspire Pip, jonka isänemo Laetare Bowler Jack. Toinen sairastunut pentu on Sparkling Jillz from Let’s Border, emonsa Butterfly Phoebe from Let’s Border.

Yhtä kaikki, epilepsiariski on. Kuten on jokaisessa muussakin pentueessa.

Tällä hetkellä yhdistelmän suurin tunnistettu terveysriski on epilepsia, viitaten edellä oleviin tapauksiin.

Sisaruksista

About Nuuka

Almost every one of us says, their dog is the very best. In everything. I’m probably also using pink-shaded glasses as I think, too, Nuuka is the best. If not perfect, then really close.

When I made Possu x Tiger combination, I wished for pups who have the high will to cooperate and work, who stand on their own feet, are a bit tougher than an average BC, are brave and curious, and aren’t afraid of noises. Nuuka is that all, has always been, even when she was a little pup. To be honest, all the pups were, but for some reason, I felt Nuuka was the right one for me, even though I was planning to keep another pup at first.

Nevertheless, Nuuka is everything I ever dared to hope for, even more. It is a pleasure to work with her, as she is always ready to do everything I come up with. And that everything is absolutely so much fun and the best thing in this world, as she is able to work with and for me. No matter if we do tracking, obedience, SAR, tricks, or just goofing around, Nuuka is always there and happy for it.

We are training goal-oriented working trial tracking, obedience, and SAR, obedience being our main sport. About two months Nuuka had trained for a tracking novice class, both in forest and obedience parts. She just loved to track and jump the obstacles!

Nuuka has an incredible capability to work, try and recover, and I respect these features very highly. She doesn’t hesitate but tries after trying if she won’t immediately succeed. I can put lots of pressure on her before she reacts to it, and she shakes that all off in the same second I reward her. After that, she is like she never got under pressure. And if she gets under pressure for some reason, she never loses her ability to function.

Nuuka is a dog with high drive and her off-button would be better. She plays inside a house with the cat. Mor, Hypno or just by herself, but most of the time she sleeps somewhere near me. She rather follows me when I move from one room to another, as she likes to be with humans. Still, she doesn’t ask for attention or work or drags toys on my lap, but she likes to join in everything I do. Within 2 centimeters. She goes away if I ask her to do so. When she was younger, we needed to do some practice to calm down. It isn’t all-natural to her, but on the other hand, it wasn’t all weird either.

Nuuka does everything as fast and powerful as possible. Her obedience is pretty impressive, as she is so full of power and joy. This has set some difficulties when comes to calm movements like distant control. Her drive has never needed to push up, only calm down. Even a long exercise or a series of exercises has never taken down her drive and will. Her stamina is unbelievable.

Nuuka likes to eat and play, but she also gets rewarded just with words and petting. I usually reward her socially, as it is as good to her as a treat. She bites pretty well on a toy, but she likes to take a grip on a handle or other small/thin place rather than biting on the middle of a toy. She also fixes her grip a lot, but still tugs with her all four feet. She also loves to retrieve, so it is very easy to reward her.

She is also very social and open. She loves people and likes to climb on their lap and lick their faces. She watches the World hearts in her eyes and won’t probably ever believe someone wants anything bad to her. If you ask Nuuka, she would surely tell her vocation is to love everyone, and work. Because of this kind of attitude, she has been really easy to train for searching from the forest/SAR, and on the other hand, we have put some time into training to ignore people when not working. Mainly she greets other dogs wooingly, other ones she runs with without brains, and other ones are a bit suspicious and she keeps her distance. Never she has shown any aggression, just moves near me.

The biggest ”problem” in this dog is probably her vocality. Both of her parents are silent workers; Tiger is silent generally, Possu likes to yodel, but not when working. Nuuka instead could yelp under pressure. This shows mainly when starting a movement, where she could let a yelp. This was an issue when she was younger, and we needed to work on that, and that yelping left for a long time, coming back after a year. Every once and a while she yelps and we need to discuss how that is not acceptable at all. Vocalizing includes mainly very high drive and rewardlessness; she starts to over-try and confines herself without perfect success in the last action. That is probably because of her young age, as that won’t be her nerves, as generally, she is a very stable and good-nerved dog.

Nuuka has developed really slowly. When she was a pup she seemed almost stupid, as she needed so much repeating to learn anything. When she became a teenager, some gears clicked in her head and she started to learn things way much quicker, and now she feels like any Border Collie when comes to the ability to learn new things. So she isn’t any kind of wunderkind, and I won’t wait for her pups either to be, so if someone is looking for a dog who is competition-ready immediately after the age has reached the minimum, I would recommend some other litter to that person.

Hypno, and the toys he is holding, is the only one Nuuka really stares at. Her World disappears when Hypno’s drive builds up, and all she can see is just HypnoHypnoHypno. I haven’t paid too much attention to this, as Hypno says to her when he gets irritated, and even though Hypno is all Nuuka can see, she is still controllable in every situation, as she is incredibly obedient and biddable. When we are training, her concentration is on me, but when she isn’t under command but just idling, she starts to look intensively at other dogs, could even lurk toward them. I think one reason for her doing that is we have trained with other dogs very little, but probably the main reason is ”but mom I want to WORK too!”

Her pedigree and family illnesses

Nuuka is mostly working line. Her mother is ISDS registered, her pedigree contains only Great-Brittain dogs, when her father is an interesting combination of European working lines; not only British but also Danish, Norwegian and Dutch dogs. Behind Tiger there is one show-lined dog in the 7th generation, which makes it will be in the 9th generation in the upcoming litter’s pedigree, so I dare to speak this litter is working line.

From her mother’s side there aren’t lots of famous herding dogs from her close relatives, but there are some good inheritors as Int & Welsh Br Ch Moss (ISDS 188389), Sadghyl Pip Me to Comebye, Canen Spangle, Canen Baz and Deveron Wisp. There are lots of liked, good working and sporting dogs out of these lines. Possu’s father has also accepted the Norwegian herding test.

If someone is looking for titles, take a look at Nuuka’s father Tiger’s pedigree, where are very successful dogs even in close pedigree. Tiger’s sire is NO & SE & NORD & INT Ob Ch, Norwegian Obedience Champion Winner ’09 Pluto (N09848/04), who has been in Norwegian National Obedience Team many years in a row, and who is generally magnificent male. There is also Wel Nat Ch ’85 & Wel Dr Ch ’87 Ben (ISDS 129820) in his pedigree.

Nuuka’s maternal grandmother is Team Stenmann Amazing Mayzee Lou, who is ISDS registered on merit, and has Danish herding titles HYRDPR1 and HYRDPR2. Mayzee has mainly been as a sheepdog in a small farm. Mayzee’s father is very liked Bob (ISDS 269836), and his father is a legend among European sheepdogs: multiple NL Nat Ch & Continential Ch ’05 Glen (ISDS 244489). Bob’s paternal grandfather is Wel Nat Ch ’98 Lad (ISDS 214439).

Also, there are many champions in closer pedigree too. There are obedience and agility champions in Possu’s half- and full-siblings, one is also doing working dog trial tracking. Some dogs have titles from rally-obedience, doggy-dancing and herding. From Tiger’s side there are also many obedience and agility champion in his half- and full-siblings, competing also in the World Championship level.

Both Tiger and Possu have titles, and they are sound, stable and safe sporting dogs. Tiger is FI & SE & DK & DK Elit & NORD Ob Ch, and Danish Obedience Champion Winner ’12. He still competes in obedience, but not as intensively when he was younger, but he has been a regular member of the Danish National Obedience Team. Possu doesn’t have any champion titles, but she has competed in many other sports; BH TK1 TK2 JK1 VK2. Possu is marvelous no matter what she does, and besides obedience (TK1, TK2, TK3), she works in working dog trials area-searching/SAR-like (HK1) message (VK2) and tracking (JK3). She has also got two accepted results from rally-obedience.

There is some epilepsy in her here. The affected dogs further in her pedigree have been expressed on previous litter page, so on this page, I’m going to tell the newer and closer cases.

When the first Dwylch-litter was roughly one year old it came to my concern there are two epi pups after Possu’s 3/4 brother My Trusted Friend Dear Roy (Canen Kane x Astra Rikky, who is a half-sister to Possu’s dam Liz). One is Luna Tale Nice Jari, his dam Luna Tale Inspire Pip, whose grandfather is Laetare Bowler Jack. Another affected pup is Sparkling Jillz from Let’s Border, her dam Butterfly Phoebe from Let’s Border.

Nevertheless, there is a risk for epi. Like there is a risk for it in every litter. The different thing is if people speak about these cases or if they hide them There is epilepsy in every line, as that disease is deep down in our breed, and we can’t fight against it if we won’t talk about it. I’m aware of the risk and I have taken it seriously when I have tried to find a sire for this litter, so I hope deeply from my heart we will evade the epi genes.

There are a few OCD cases too. More about these in the previous litter page, as, luckily!, there are no new cases.

Both Possu and Tiger’s fathers have left some bad hips. From my previous litter, there were 5 pups with A hips and one with C. I can’t see there is a big risk for bad hips, but I have take also this into notice with this litter. For now, the biggest known health risk is epilepsy.

Siblings

I have met two siblings from time to time; Roihu and Spock. From practical reasons I haven’t seen others but we have kept contact.

I’m very pleased with the previous litter, as pretty much every pup is that kind of dog I hoped them to be. According to the conversations Buckle in the US and Tiger in Norway are a bit softer than the rest of the pups, being probably close to average soft/sensitive on a BC scale. Otherwise all pups are brave, open, curious dogs who people and working. Only Buckle has shown voice sensitiveness, which is explained by his owner that their other dog is frightened of loud noises and Buckle has learned from him. Buckle is afraid of thunder and fireworks, he loses his ability to work. He lives in a New York suburb where people shoot fireworks every now and then. Also his owner has said, he had no problem when his best dog pal was still alive, but after he needed put to sleep, Buckle started to react to noises. We guess it is because there isn’t any more supportive role model, only the frightened one. But these situations are the only ones he is scared of – everywhere else he is like his home and every other noise means nothing to him. And the same time I have trained SAR with Nuuka near a shooting range, and she didn’t turn her ear.

Nevertheless, every owner seems to be pleased with their pup, and a couple of them have said they like to have another pup from me. That is what my aim with the new litter; that they fulfill my hopes but most importantly, their owners are pleased with them.

Zicosta

Nykyään paimennus on jäänyt ajanpuutteen vuoksi.

Urosta on kuvailtu voimakkaaksi, luontaiseksi paimenkoiraksi, jossa on kaikki vaadittavat palikat työskentelyyn. Valitettavasti Guapo on menehtynyt työtapaturmassa.

Isänsä Atila 151 Encruzilhada do Sul on yhtä lailla Brasilian nauta champion sekä lammas vice-champion.

Fera dos Pardaisin isänisä on jo edellä mainittu Moment du Chene de Montels.

About Zico

When I was looking for a male for Nuuka, I was looking for a calmer, stabler and quiet dog who can stand on its own feet. It was hoped to have the same hard-working, work-oriented attitude who could work for a long day but not be as hectic as Nuuka.

I had a couple of males in my mind, and finally ended up with Zico. This dog has got me interested a couple of years ago because of his pedigree – he has come to Finland as far as from Brazil, and pedigree is full of American and South American working dogs. The first dog on Zicon’s pedigree, which is also found behind some other Finnish dogs, is in the fourth generation – Agility World-Vice Champion Moment du Chene de Montels.

Also his health results were pleasing: HD A/A and ED 0/0. His shoulders and spine are not x-rayed, but they have never been symptomatic. Instead, he is a very elastic dog that doesn’t even need a massage but rarely, and he has never been in any structural/bone affecting accident. A few teeth have gone when he learned to carry rocks.

Zico is by his character pretty close to what I’m looking for. His toughness is pretty much the average Border Collie and he doesn’t get under pressure even if the owner’s voice rises. He doesn’t lose his ability to work or get under pressure easily, and stands repetition excellently, doing again and again what he is asked for. He doesn’t take disturbance from people or other dogs, but focuses entirely on his own doing. He has excellent prey drive and will-to-fight, and he prefers playing as a reward. However, Zico likes also social rewarding, and treats are taken in a more peaceful state of mind. He loves people, but is more polite than Nuuka.

Zico’s main sport is agility where he has competed in the third class. He hasn’t competed in some years but trains regularly every week. As a youngster he went to herd sheep where he was very natural and powerful. Nowadays herding has left because of lack of time.

Even though he runs fast in the agility course, he doesn’t yell when running, and he doesn’t lose his mind but keep his head cool. He follows the instructions but will also be able to make independent solutions. He turns very fast and tightly, twisting around the wings. When on sheep he is more independent.

Zico is otherwise sound-secure, but he reacts to thunder and fireworks. This is probably learned behavior because in Uruguay the thunderstorms are much stronger than we have in Finland, and the older dog of the family stressed them. It also supports the theory his thunder/firework insecurity is a learned behavior as his both parents are sound-secure, and Zico does not react to the shots. I was worried about this sound stuff, but when I met Zico, the owner remembered they have been watching a biathlon competition and near the shooting range, and Zico didn’t react in any way.

Absolutely the worst side in Zico situates in his ability to relax. When he is in a competition he can’t relax properly even if the day is long. He can and will lie on the ground and also stay there, but he can’t sleep. He is always a bit alert. He also got stuck on a toy with his eyes on some level. At home however, he is out of the way and just sleeps somewhere.

Zico has a touch of dominancy as he protects his car from strangers. When the family is at home he thinks guests are wonderful but if his own people aren’t at home, then nobody else has anything to do inside.

His pedigree and family illnesses

Zico is an interesting male by his pedigree: his father Guapo Torena is a U.S.-Brazilian-Uruguayan, and her mother, W’Sol dos Pardais, is French-Dutch-Brazilian. Behind his dam there are some well-known lines in 6 gen such as Viber, Batavia’s, Detania, Altricia and Clan-Abby. So there is a touch of showline in the background.

Especially Guapo’s pedigree is impressive to read; the male is Brazilian National Cattle Champion and Brasilian National Sheep Vice-Ch. He’s also Regional Champion in both cattle and sheep, in fact, he is two times cattle champion in two subsequent years. Guapo has also represented Brazil at the ISDS World Trial in 2011. The male has been described as a powerful, natural herding dog with all the required bits to work. He wasn’t only an excellent working dog, but also kind, cheerful and trustworthy. Unfortunately, Guapo has died in an accident at work.

His father Atila 151 Encruzilhada do Sul is also Brazilian Cattle Champion and Sheep Vice-Champion. Atila was also the first Brazilian dog to represent ISDS world championships. In the 5 gen there is Nick (ABC 1778), who was the US National Champion in 1989, 1990 and 1993.

Behind Guapa’s mother, Tigra Torena, is the male Flecha I do Pires Saldanha, who was the Brazilian National and Ranch Sheep Champion. Tigra itself has been described with the same words as Guapo; a powerful, natural working dog with the courage and guts to work in demanding conditions.

Zico’s dam W’Sol dos Pardais side of the pedigree is perhaps more of a sport-oriented, and there are a few Agility Champions. Sol herself has competed at the open-level both sheep and cattle. She has a pleasant character and excellent herding drive, and she has worked as a primary working dog in her home farm.

Sol’s father is Fera dos Pardais, the Brazilian and Paulistan Agility Champion. The Amazing Dina Brown V D Wilbam imported from the Netherlands is the Caribbean and US Agility Champion. Fera dos Pardais’ grandfather is already mentioned Moment du Chene de Montels.

Even though Zico’s family is interesting and titled, it is a regrettable fact that virtually nothing is known about the healthiness of the pedigree. The hip has been x-rayed from a few close-related dogs, not to mention other health checks. I’m not aware of any epileptic or OCD cases, but that doesn’t mean there is no any. Using Zico is a bit like buying a pig in a sack but let’s hope the pig is as healthy as possible.
