Yhdistelmästä

Koska Riitteen suku on melkein täysin tuntematonta, koin tärkeäksi valita sille uroksen, jonka suvusta on runsaasti tietoa saatavilla. Muistelin kuulleeni aiemmin Zavin pentueista paljon hyvää, niin luonteiden kuin terveyden saralta, joten päädyin käyttämään sitä vaikka sillä itsellään onkin useita pentueita (ja olen matadorkäyttöä vastaan). Näin kuitenkin tarpeelliseksi “pelata varman päälle” juurikin niin hämäräperäissukuisen koiran kuin Riitteen kanssa.

Toivon Zavin ja Riitteen pennuista ensisijaisesti iloisia, yhteistyöhaluisia ja helposti palkkautuvia koiria, jotka ovat arjessa vaivattomia. Zavi on periyttänyt vahvasti luonnettaan, joten toivon sen itsevarmuuden tasapainottavan Riitteen tarvetta pöhistä ja mielistellä. 

Väristä mainittakoon sen verran, että Zavi on geneettisesti tuplamerle, todennäköisesti Mh/Mc, joten kaikki pennut tulevat olemaan jonkinasteisia merlejä. Koska Riite on m/m, pentueessa ei pitäisi olla suurta valkopäisyys- tai kuurousriskiä, joskin harlekiinimerle Mh saattaa aiheuttaa näitä kumpaakin. Tähän päivään mennessä Zavilla ei kuitenkaan ole yhtään kuulovajeista tai valkopäistä pentua, muutama splitface kyllä on.

Kodeilta toivon tavoitteellista harrastuneisuutta ja yhteistyöhalukkuutta. Jos sinulla ei ole kiinnostusta pitää yhteyttä minuun, tämä pentue ei ole sinulle. Pentue ei myöskään ole soveltuva ensimmäiseksi koiraksi, vaan jonkinlainen koiraharrastuneisuus pitäisi löytyä taustalta. Itselleni tyypillisesti suosin toko-, pk-, ja peko-koteja, mutta kaikki toki huomioidaan – mahdollisilla kasvattaja-/pentuepäivillä vaan ei ole tarjolla koulutuksia kuin vain näiden lajien osalta.

About the combination

Because Riite’s pedigree is almost entirely unknown, I felt it was important to choose a stud dog with a well-documented background. I remembered hearing a lot of positive things about Zavi’s previous litters—regarding both temperament and health—so I decided to use him, even though he already has several litters (and I’m generally against matadors). However, with a dog of such obscure lineage like Riite, I saw this as a necessary “safe bet.”

My hope for the puppies from Zavi and Riite is that they will primarily be happy, cooperative, and easily motivated dogs that are easy in everyday life. Zavi has consistently passed on his temperament, so I hope his confidence will help balance out Riite’s tendency to fuss and people-please.

As for color, it’s worth mentioning that Zavi is genetically a double merle, most likely Mh/Mc, so all the puppies will be merle to some extent. Since Riite is m/m, there should not be a significant risk of white heads or deafness in the litter, although the harlequin merle Mh can potentially cause both. To date, however, Zavi has not had any deaf or white headed puppies—though there have been a few with split faces

From the future homes, I hope for committed, goal-oriented owners who are motivated to do cooperation. If you’re not interested in keeping in contact with me, this is not the litter for you. This is also not a suitable litter for a first-time dog owner—some prior experience in sport/working dogs is expected. As usual for me, I prioritize homes interested in obedience, working trials (tracking, searching, protection, etc), or SAR, though all homes will be considered. However, any breeder or litter days I organize will only include training opportunities for these sports.

Riitteestä

Kun omat pentuesuunnitelmani olivat menneet vähän siten sun täten, minun piti alkaa katsella itselleni uutta pentua ulkomailta. Varauduin kyseisen projektin kestävän noin pari vuotta, mutta siinä menikin noin kaksi kuukautta, kun bongasin Riitteen kasvattajan tekemän pentuemainoksen. Yksi narttupentu etsi sopivasti kotia, kasvattaja oli todella mukavan ja järkevän oloinen, pentueen emo kuulosti ihan täydelliseltä koiralta, eikä isäkään ollut hullumpi. Heräteostospentu vol2 oli ostoskorissa alta aikayksikön.

Riite on ihan mieletön eläin! Se oli pentuna ihan täydellinen, siinä oli kaikki palikat joita koiralta toivoin. Sitten siitä tuli teini, ja sen palikat levisi kuin jokisen eväät pitkin alavuutta, ja vähän ennen täytettyään kaksi vuotta, se hoksasi että voi kerätä ne palikat ja pistää takaisin kasaan. Nyt se on taas ihan täydellinen.

Olen aina ajatellut, että Mor on varsin fiksu koira (siinä missä Nuukalla on kaksi aivosolua), mutta vasta Riitteen kanssa koin “ai TÄTÄ ihmiset tarkoittavat, kun sanovat bordercollien olevan fiksu ja oppivan nopeasti”-elämyksen. Riite oppii kuin kone, se on todella fiksu ja hoksaa erittäin nopeasti mitä siltä halutaan. Olin aidosti hämmästynyt siitä, miten nopeasti se oli avo-valmis tokossa sillä treenimäärällä, mitä sillä oli alla. Se vain jotenkin omaksuu kaiken muutamilla toistoilla ja muistaa oppimansa. Siinä mielessä siis ihanteellinen tokokoira.

Riite selkeästi nauttii työnteosta. Tokoa se rakastaa, siinä sillä on puolimaaninen asenne, ja jos osoitan itse huvittuneisuutta, se lyö koko homman läskiksi ja lisää muun muassa ääni- tai liike-efektin mukaan – kaukoissa se tekee vaihdon sanoen pöh, seuruussa se pomppii joka toisella askeleella. Kunhan vain saan pidettyä itseni kasassa, se ei tee tällaisia pelleilyjä. Siinä on siis selkeästi lavakoomikon vikaa: “höhöö sinulla on hauskaa, vaan katsopas TÄTÄ!” Tämä on hieman haastavaa siksi, koska jotenkin tuo koira huvittaa minua aina, ihan vain olemassaolollaan.

Jäljellä Riite on todella hyvä, vaikka sitä ollaan varsin vähän tehty. Opetin sille ensin kepit sisällä varmaan puolta vuotta ennen ensimmäistä jälkeä, ja jo toisen vai kolmannen jäljen kohdalla lisäsin kepit mukaan. Se ilmaisi niitä oikein heti, ja nyt sen tapa on ottaa keppi suuhun ja mennä maahan sen kanssa. Myös jälkitreenit ovat edenneet todella nopeasti, ja pituutta sekä kulmien määrää olen saanut lisäillä jokaisella treenikerralla. Ainut selkeä ongelmakohta on huolellisuus nimenomaan keppien kanssa – Riite tahtoo porskuttaa varsin usein niiden ohi. Se on myös varsin hauska jäljellä siksi, että sen mielestä on maailman surullisinta kun jälkivaljaat laitetaan, mutta kuin sormia napsauttamalla surullisuus unohtuu, kun lähdetään liikkumaan kohti jälkeä.

Uiminen on Riitteen ehdoton lempijuttu, ja se kuluttaa sulan maan aikaan noin puolet lenkillä oloajasta vesistöissä. Tästä syystä sen kanssa aloitettiin vepe viime kesänä, ja tarkoitus on jatkaa myös tänä kesänä. Myös vepessä se on ollut kovin pätevä, eikä esimerkiksi esineen venelle vienti ole ollut sille samalla tavalla ongelma, mitä se monille koirille on. Sen sijaan ongelma tässä lajissa on se, että aina ihmisiä lähestyessään se on “lipilipi rakasta minua minä rakastan sinua”, ja se ui veneelle luimistellen ja lipitellen, ja tiputtaa esineen tästä syystä. Sen kanssa onkin saatu ensisijaisesti treenata esineen oikeaoppista luovuttamista, jotta mielistely jäisi pois.

Tästä päästäänkin Riitteen varsinaiseen luonteeseen. Se on fiksuuden lisäksi hirveän ystävällinen ja rakastava koira. Se mielistelee ihmisiä, kiipeilee ventovieraiden syliin ja lipittää näiden naamoja. Toisaalta se myös huutaa kaikille ihmisille, oli ne sitten tuttuja tai tuntemattomia. Ja sen jälkeen lipilipi. Kotona se haluaisi olla vieressä silitettävänä, ja se säännöllisen epäsäännöllisesti tulee tuijottamaan viereen ja kerjäämään rapsutuksia. Se myös palkkautuu äärimmäisen hyvin sosiaalisesti silittelyillä ja rapsutuksilla.

Riite jaksaa yrittää ja yrittää epäonnistuttuaan. Se ei ota nokkiinsa korjauksista, vaikka toisinaan sille saa aika tiukastikin huomauttaa asiasta x. Se saattaa näyttää kolme sekuntia surulliselta, sitten se on taas kieli poskella pelleilemässä. Se ei ota painetta myöskään muista tilassa treenaavista koirista, eikä sitä myöskään kiinnosta muut koirat, vaan se keskittyy täysin tekemään minun kanssa juttuja. Sillä ei ole tarvetta myöskään lähteä muiden lelujen perään.

Tähän päivään mennessä se ei ole reagoinut koviin ääniin. Mikään alusta ei ole askarruttanut sitä, mikään tilanne ei ole aiheuttanut pelkoa. Se on kuitenkin vilkas koira, ja kaupungilla kulkiessa se ei kävele rennosti, vaan katselee aika tavalla kaiken aikaa kaikkialle. Puolustukseksi tosin sanottakoon, että Riite on elämänsä aikana käynyt kolmesti kaupungilla.

Teini-ikä oli tosiaan hankala, ja silloin se oli huomattavan epävarma ja surullinen. Pentuna sillä oli aina sellainen typerä virne naamalla, teininä se oli pääasiallisesti vain surullinen. Teini-ikä kesti suunnilleen 1v ikäisestä ehkä 1v 10kk ikäiseksi, eikä tuona aikana treenitkään hirveästi maistuneet. Se tarvitsi tällöin nostatusta, ja parhain nostatus olikin sille Nuukan tai Morin treenien katsominen. Se huutaakin kurkku suorana, jos näkee jomman kumman näistä tekemässä töitä.

Joku voi pitää vokaalisuutta ongelmana, mutta minusta se on lähinnä huvittavaa. Riite pitää jotain ääntä varmaan 90% hereilläoloajastaan. 10% tästä ajasta on turhaa pöhinää, 80% on leikkimisestä aiheutuvaa mölinää, ja loput 10% on piippaamista kun asia x turhauttaa tai on vain tylsää ja liikaa virtaa. Hämmentävintä tosiaan on se, ettei se töissä pidä yhtään mitään ääntä – paitsi silloin jos sille nauraa.

Mainittavaa toki on, että kotona Riite ei siis touhua kaiken aikaa, päin vastoin. Olen tottunut siihen, että koirat lopettavat itsekseen sisällä leikkimisen noin pari vuotiaana, mutta Riite lopetti jo vuoden iässä. Kotona se pääasiallisesti nukkuu jossain suht lähellä, leikkikohtauksia se saa muutamia päivän aikana. Se ei tyrkytä leluja tai vaadi tekemistä. Se kyllä osallistuu ihan kaikkeen mitä kotona tapahtuu, mutta menee loitommalle jos sitä käsketään.

Lenkeillä se tohottaa menemään koko ulkoilun ajan. Se ei irtoa koskaan kauaksi, ja jos pysähdyn, se tulee välittömästi luo. Pääasiallisesti se on jossain kymmenen metrin säteellä, ja tekee vähä väliä tsekkauksia minun luona. Se ajautuu luontaisesti minun taakse, jos tulee tien ylitys tms hidastus.

Suurin synti tässä koirassa on sen epä(itse)varmuus. Se näkyy juurikin siinä pöhinänä ihmisille ja koirille, ja minun luokse tulemisessa jännittävissä tilanteissa. Se hakee minusta tukea aina, kun jokin jännittää sitä, mutta samalla se on myös äärimmäisen utelias koira, ja haluaa tutkia jännittävää asiaa. Se ei menetä missään kohtaa toimintakykyä tai pakene, vaan alkujärkytyksen jälkeen tarkastaa jännän asian ja on siitä välittömästi yli.

Jännitystilanne saattaa siis olla vieras ihminen, joka tulee vastaan lenkillä metsässä. Riite tulee minun luo, ja muutaman sekunnin (ja huudon) jälkeen haluaa mennä tervehtimään ihmistä. Mikään paikka tai alusta ei ole sille aiheuttanut jännitystä, vaan se menee hyvin rohkeasti häntä tötteröllä tutkimaan kaikki mahdolliset paikat. Myöskään julkiset tilat joissa on muita ihmisiä ja koiria, ei aiheuta mitään epäitsevarmaa pöhinää tai tuen hakemista, vaan se pystyy kulkemaan koiria ja ihmisiä täynnä olevassa treenihallissa mielistyskiemurrellen.

Suvusta

Riitteen suvusta ei tiedetä käytännössä mitään. Sieltä täältä jotain, mutta koska kyseessä on pitkän päälle käytännön paimenkoirista koostuva suku, ei siellä ole edes lonkkia pahemmin kuvailtu.

Isä Seth on ensisijaisesti paimenkoira, toissijaisesti agilitykoira, ja kolsijaisesti temppukoira. Se on paimentaessa rauhallisen tyylikäs, ja se on hyvin kontaktissa omistajansa kanssa. Se on suorittanut paikallisen paimennuksen perusradan (ChBCConf), ja kisaa bordercollieiden paimennuksessa ensimmäisessä luokassa (BC1). Agilityssa se kisaa kakkosluokassa.

Seth on erittäin tasapainoinen, ystävällinen, iloinen ja aktiivinen koira. Se ei stressaa mitään, eikä mikään myöskään pelota sitä. Se on herkkyydeltään/pehmeydeltään varsin perus bc – se ei lopeta hommia vaikka päälle tulee painetta, mutta se ottaa siitä vähän itseensä. Se on myös täysin alusta- ja äänivarma. Se on kummankin vanhemman kautta ranskalaista nautapaimenlinjaa.

Seth tulee toimeen muiden koirien kanssa, joskin riitaa haastavat urokset aiheuttavat sille hännän nostoa ja pöristelyä. Jos riitaa ei haasteta, sitten silläkään ei ole mitään ongelmia. Ihmisistäkin kaikki menee ilman ongelmia, mutta se ei ole yltiösosiaalinen ja kontaktinhakuinen koira vieraiden kanssa. Oma väki ja tutut ovat sille rakkaita, mutta vieraat ihmiset ovat jokseenkin ilmaa.

Muita tutkimuksia Sethille ei ole tehty, kuin lonkat ja silmäpeili. 

Sethin isä Blue Boy on ollut aikanaan multitalentti. Se on kisannut ylimmässä luokassa niin tokossa, agilityssa, koiratanssissa kuin paimennuksessa. Perusradan lisäksi sillä on lammaspaimennustitteli TO2, ja se kisasi lammaspaimennuksessa kolmosluokassa. Agilityssa se tosiaan ylti kolmosluokkaan. Koirantanssin freestylessä siitä tuli Ranskan mestari vähän päälle kaksi vuotiaana. Toko taas oli sen ykköslaji, ja siinä se kisasi MM-tasolla; vuonna 2012 se sijoittui yhdeksänneksi, ja Ranskan kansallisella tasolla se on ollut neljäs ja viides.

Omistajansa kuvailee urosta äärimmäisen fiksuksi, nopeaoppiseksi ja toimeliaaksi. Se oppi kaiken todella nopeasti, hoksasi juttujen jujun kuin sormia napsauttamalla, ja tästä syystä se loistikin ihan kaikessa mitä se vain teki. Se oli todella ystävällinen ja tasapainoinen koira, ripauksella ilkikurisuutta. Nopea, ketterä, ja aktiivinen.

Blue Boyta ei ole luustokuvattu eikä silmäpeilattu. Se on kuitenkin ollut koko elämänsä ajan terve, ja vasta 12-vuotiaana sillä on todettu etujalan varpaissa nivelrikkoa. 

Sethin emo Habby on rotuunotettu koira. Sen sukutaulu on siis tuntematon, joten sieltä voi tietenkin tulla ihan mitä tahansa. Habby on kuitenkin iloinen, sillä on jalat korvautuneet jousilla, ja siinä on työnarkomaanin vikaa. Sillä ei ole ollut mitään terveysongelmia elämänsä aikana, ja vielä 11-vuotiaana se oli erinomaisessa kunnossa. Habby on myös kisannut lammaspaimennuksessa kakkosluokassa, keräten alemman luokan tittelin TO1. Siltä on jopa lonkat kuvattu A/A:ksi.

Ja loput Sethin suvusta onkin sitten peruspaimenta. Blue Boyn isoisä Roy du Berger de la Vallee des Geants löytyy toisinaan sukutauluista myös Ranskan ulkopuolelta, ilmeisesti se oli pidetty paimenkoira. Ranskassa on hyvinkin vahva merlejen paimenkoirien kanta, mikä näyttäisi olevan maailman mittakaavassa hyvin harvinaista.

Riitteen emo Oona oli puhtaasti paimenkoira, mitään muuta se ei ole tehnyt. Sethin tavoin myös se oli paimenessa rauhallinen ja tyylikäs, ilman neuroottista edestakaisin juoksemista lauman takana. Sillä oli niin bordercollieiden paimennuksen BC1 kuin “yleisen paimennuksen” TO1, ja se kisasi kummassakin lajissa kakkosluokassa.

Oona oli luonteeltaan aika tavalla minun ihannekoira, ja sen vuoksi halusinkin juuri siitä pennun. Se oli ystävällinen, iloinen, aktiivinen, tasapainoinen ja painetta kestävä. Jos sen kanssa ei tiennyt mitä teki, Oona vedätti kuusinolla ohjaajaa. Se vaati jossain määrin auktoriteettia toimiakseen, eikä se ottanut itseensä kovastakaan korjaamisesta. Sille sai antaa kovastikin painetta, eikä sen asenne muuttunut miksikään. Se oli myös ääni- ja alustavarma – se asui alueella, jossa ammuskellaan pitkin vuotta ties mitä lintuja ja rusakoita. Näin Oonaa Riitettä hakiessani, ja se oli ihastuttavan rauhallinen ja järkevä vilkkaalla lentokentällä.

Oonalla oli A:n lonkat, 0:n kyynärpäät ja puhtaat silmät. Se eli terveenä siihen asti, kunnes sairastui leptospiroosiin kuusi vuotiaana, ja menehtyi siihen hoidoista huolimatta. Itse asiassa myös Blue Boy menehtyi leptospiroosiin.

Oonan isä Leo on puhtaasti käytännön paimenkoira, eikä sillä ole mitään tuloksia perusradan lisäksi, ei edes lonkkatulosta. Leo on about ¾ ISDS-koira, sen emolinja on ranskalaisia sukuja. Leon isänisä on Scot Nat Ch Llanfarian Jim ISDS283346. Leon emonisä on Brave Craig ISDS295029, Ranskan paimennusmestari 2014 ja Euroopan/Cont kolmas 2015, ja tämän isä puolestaan on Int Sup Ch Llangwm Bob. Craigin emonisä on Int Sup Ch Roy ISDS200199. Ja Leon emonemonisä on Shark LOF11510/1609, joka oli Ranskan paimennusmestaruuden toinen kolmena vuonna, Euroopan/Cont kolmas 2007, sekä Ranskan kansallisessa paimennustiimissä maailmanmestaruuskisoissa kolmena vuotena.

Oonan emon Maïocin puoli on samanlaista peruspaimenta, joita ei ole suuremmin viitsitty röntgeniin viedä. Viidennestä polvesta löytyy taas Shark, sekä paimennuksen kolmosluokan (TO3) titteleitä kolmelta koiralta. Kuudennessa sukupolvessa on mielenkiintoinen Yhdysvaltojen tuonti Hugh LOF4055/559, joka on niin Ranskan paimennusmestari, kuin myös paimennusvalio. Sieltä jostain takaa löytyy myös Droopy LOF1976/301, joka oli aikanaan ihka ensimmäinen Euroopan/Cont mestari vuonna 1991.

Riitteen suvusta löytyy aika tavalla ihan kaikki Ranskan työkoirasuvut, ja jos sukutaulua katsoo taaksepäin, piiripienipyörii ihan urakalla muun muassa Hughin ja Droopyn ympärillä. Mainittavaa on, että joka ikisellä ranskalaisella koiralla on paimennuksen perusrata suoritettuna.

Riitteen sisarukset ovat kaikki menneet harrastaviin koteihin. 

Veli Upset on suorittanut paimennuksen perusradan, sekä sosiaalisuustesti CSAU:n. Se on myös tryffelietsinnässä kakkosluokassa. Paimennus on Upsetin päälaji, ja sen sekä tryffeleiden lisäksi se treenaa agilitya ja hoopersia. Se on luustokuvattu HD A/A ED 0/0. Toinen veli Uppy “Youpi” on paimenena nautakarjatilalla. Kolmas veli Uith treenaa tryffeleitä. Neljäs veli Ulysse on suorittanut myös CSAUn, ja se treenaa agilitya ja hoopersia.

Sisko Uguette jäi kasvattajalle, ja sen päätoimi on paimennus. Se treenaa myös agilitya, ja on hiljattain liittynyt pelastusryhmään, jossa se treenaa mantrailingia, käytännössä siis maasto- ja id-jäljestystä. Se on HD A, ED 0, OCD 0. Toinen sisko Umaï on puhtaasti paimenkoira, se on suorittanut perusradan, ja sillä on niin lonkat kuin kyynärpäät epävirallisesti terveet. Kolmas sisko Utah on suorittanut CSAUn ja kisaa agilityssa.

Sisaruksilla tuntuu olevan hyvin samankaltainen luonne keskenään. Kaikki ovat iloisia, aktiivisia, työtä rakastavia ja helppoja koiria arjessa. Kaikilla myös Upsetia lukuunottamatta on varautuneisuutta/välinpitämättömyyttä vieraita ihmisiä kohtaan. Kukaan näistä ei siis väistä ihmisiä, mutta ne eivät kiinnosta, ja niille pitää haukkua. Tutut ovat taas asia erikseen, niitä kollektiivisesti kaikki rakastavat.

Puolisisaruksista löytyy neljä, jotka ovat suorittaneet CSAUn, kaksi on suorittanut perusradan, kaksi kisaa agilityssa, ja yksi on virallistettu pelastuskoira. Ketään ei ole luustokuvattu tai muutenkaan tutkittu.

Sairauksista

Tämä kohta jää täysin tyngäksi, koska sairauksista minulla ei ole mitään tietoa. Riitteen kasvattaja ei tiennyt lähisuvusta mitään ongelmia, ei Oonan aiempiin pentuihin tai Sethin sisaruksiin liittyen. Suvussa voi siis olla ihan mitä tahansa, mutta mainittavaa on, että ranskalaisia uroksia tunnutaan käytettävän vielä varsin vanhoina. Hyvänä esimerkkinä tästä on Sethin isä, joka oli 11-vuotias pentueen syntymäaikana, ja tämä oli myös sen ainut pentue. Myös Oonan emon isä oli 11-vuotias Maïocin pentueen aikaan. Suvussa on siis todistettavasti hyväkuntoisia vanhempia koiria, joten uskoni siihen, että ranskalaiset koirat ovat “perusterveitä” on varsin vahva. Tämä ei kuitenkaan poista sitä, etteikö sukutaulussa voisi olla sivusuuntiin vakavia sairauksia.

About Riite

When my own litter plans had gone a bit this way and that, I had to start looking for a new puppy from abroad. I was prepared for this project to take about two years, but it ended up taking only about two months before I spotted a litter ad from Riite’s breeder. One female puppy happened to be looking for a home, the breeder seemed really nice and sensible, the dam of the litter sounded like the perfect dog, and the sire wasn’t bad either. Impulse buy puppy vol. 2 was in the shopping cart in no time.

Riite is an absolutely amazing animal! As a puppy, she was perfect—she had all the pieces I could have wished for in a dog. Then she became a teenager, and those pieces scattered like a picnic in the wind, but a little before she turned two, she figured out she could gather them back up and put herself together again. Now she’s back to being perfect.

I’ve always thought Mor was a pretty smart dog (whereas Nuuka has about two brain cells), but it wasn’t until Riite that I truly experienced what people mean when they say a border collie is smart and learns quickly. Riite learns like a machine—she’s wickedly clever and picks up on what’s expected of her extremely fast. I was genuinely amazed at how quickly she was ready for OB1 class given the limited training she had. She somehow just absorbs everything in a few repetitions and retains it. In that sense, she’s an ideal obedience dog.

Riite clearly enjoys working. She loves obedience and has a semi-manic attitude towards it. If I show even the slightest amusement, she turns it into a comedy show—adding sound or movement effects. In distance control, she’ll do a position change while saying “puff,” and in heelwork, she hops on every other step. As long as I keep myself composed, she doesn’t mess around. She’s clearly got a bit of a stage comedian in her: “Oh, you think that’s funny? Well, check THIS out!” It’s a bit of a challenge, because honestly, the dog just amuses me constantly, just by existing.

In tracking, Riite is very good, even though we haven’t done it much. I taught her to find tracking objects indoors for probably half a year before we even laid our first track. By the second or third track, I included the sticks, and she indicated them correctly right away. Now her way is to grab the stick and lie down with it. Her tracking training has progressed quickly—I’ve been able to increase the length and number of corners with each session. The only clear issue is with precision specifically regarding the sticks—she often powers right past them. She’s also pretty amusing on the track, because she thinks it’s the saddest thing in the world when the tracking harness goes on, but the second we head toward the track, she snaps out of it like flipping a switch.

Swimming is Riite’s absolute favorite thing, and during the snow-free months she spends about half her walk time in the water. That’s why we started water rescue last summer, and we plan to continue this summer as well. She’s been really capable in water work too—bringing an object to the boat hasn’t been an issue for her like it is for many dogs. The problem, however, is that when she approaches people, she goes into full “slurpslirp please love me I love you” mode—she swims to the boat submissively and eagerly, and ends up dropping the object because of it. So our main focus has been training her to hand over the item correctly, to cut the excessive slurpslirnpess.

Which brings us to Riite’s actual personality. In addition to being smart, she is incredibly friendly and affectionate. She tries to charm people, climbs into the laps of strangers, and licks their faces. On the flip side, she also barks at everyone—friends or strangers alike. And then to tail-wagging charm. At home, she wants to lie next to me and be petted, and she regularly irregularly comes to sit by me, staring and begging for attention. She is highly socially motivated and sees petting and affection as rewarding.

Riite keeps trying even after failing. She doesn’t get upset by corrections, even if she sometimes needs a fairly firm reminder about thing X. She might look sad for three seconds, and then she’s back goofing around with her tongue out. She doesn’t get pressured by other dogs training in the same space, and she isn’t interested in other dogs—she focuses entirely on working with me. She also has no desire to chase after anyone else’s toys.

So far, she hasn’t reacted to loud noises. No surface has bothered her, no situation has made her afraid. She is, however, a lively dog, and in the city walks she isn’t relaxed—she’s constantly observing everything around her. In her defense, she’s only been to the city three times in her life.

The teenage phase was rough—she was clearly insecure and sad. As a puppy, she always had this silly grin on her face; as a teen, she was mostly just sad. Her teenage phase lasted from about 1 year to maybe 1 year and 10 months, and during that time she wasn’t much into training either. What helped her most during that time was watching Nuuka or Mor train—she’d scream her head off whenever she saw either of them working.

Some might see her vocal nature as a problem, but I mostly find it amusing. Riite makes some sort of noise during 90% of her awake time. Of that, 10% is pointless puffhuffing, 80% is noisy play sounds, and the remaining 10% is whining due to frustration or excess energy. The most baffling part is that she’s completely silent when working—unless I laugh at her.

It’s worth mentioning that at home, Riite is not constantly active—quite the opposite. I’m used to dogs naturally phasing out playing alone inside by the age of around two, but Riite stopped playing indoors already at one year old. At home, she mostly just sleeps somewhere relatively close by. She has short play spurts a few times a day, she doesn’t constantly offer toys or demand activity. She definitely pays attention to everything that’s happening in the home, but will move away if told to.

On walks she’s on the move the entire time. She never strays far, and if I stop, she immediately comes back to me. Most of the time, she stays within about a ten-meter radius, checking in with me regularly. If we need to cross a road or slow down for some reason, she naturally drifts behind me without being told.

Her biggest flaw is her insecurity. It shows in her huffing at people and dogs, and in how she returns to me in stressful situations. She always seeks support from me when something makes her nervous, but she’s also intensely curious and wants to investigate what made her feel that way. She never freezes or flees—instead, after a moment of surprise, she checks it out and immediately gets over it.

A typical stress trigger might be a stranger appearing on a forest path. Riite comes to me, huffs a bit, and then wants to go say hello. No place or surface has ever made her anxious—she confidently explores everything with her tail up. Even public spaces filled with people and dogs don’t bother her—she navigates crowded training halls with a wiggly, flirtatious tail.

Her pedigree

Very little is known about Riite’s pedigree. There are bits and pieces here and there, but since it mostly consists of practical working sheepdogs, even hip evaluations are rarely recorded.

Riite’s sire, Seth, is first and foremost a herding dog, secondly an agility dog, and thirdly a trick dog. When herding, he has a calm and stylish working style and maintains excellent connection with his handler. He has passed the local basic herding test (ChBCConf) and competes in the first class of border collie herding trials (BC1). In agility, he has A2.

Seth is a very stable, friendly, cheerful, and active dog. He doesn’t stress about anything, and nothing seems to scare him. In terms of sensitivity, he’s a fairly typical border collie – he won’t stop working even under pressure, but he may take it a little personally. He is completely stable on all surfaces and with sounds. Through both his parents, he comes from a French cattle-herding line.

Seth gets along with other dogs, although if another male tries to pick a fight, he will respond with a raised tail and a bit of growling. If there’s no challenge, there’s no problem. With people she is friendly – though he isn’t overly social or attention-seeking with strangers. He loves his family and familiar people, but strangers are more or less invisible to him.

Seth has only been health-tested for hips and eyes.

Seth’s sire, Blue Boy, was something of a multi-talent. He competed at the highest level in obedience, agility, dog dancing, and herding. In addition to the basic herding test, he held a sheep herding title (TO2) and competed in the third class. He had A3, in freestyle he became the French National Champion in 2008, just a bit after turning two. Obedience, however, was his main sport – he competed at the World Championship level, placing 9th in 2012, and 4th and 5th in French National Championships.

His owner described him as extremely smart, quick to learn, and eager to work. He picked up on new things instantly and excelled at everything he tried. He was very friendly and stable-minded, with a touch of mischief. Fast, agile, and energetic.

Blue Boy was never x-rayed or eye-tested. However, he remained healthy throughout his life, only being diagnosed with arthritis in the toes of his front legs at age 12.

Seth’s dam, Habby, is a dog of unknown background who was accepted into the breed registry. Her pedigree is unknown, so anything could be in there. However, Habby is cheerful, with springs for legs, and has a strong work drive. She’s had no health issues during her life, and even at 11 years old she was in excellent shape. Habby also competed in sheep herding in class 2, holding a lower-level title (TO1), and her hips were A/A.

The rest of Seth’s pedigree consists of typical working sheepdogs. Blue Boy’s grandsire, Roy du Berger de la Vallée des Géants, appears occasionally in pedigrees outside France – he was reportedly a well-regarded working dog. France has a strong tradition of merle-colored herding dogs, which seems to be quite rare on a global scale.

Riite’s dam, Oona, was purely a herding dog – she did nothing else. Like Seth, she had a calm and stylish herding manner, with none of the frantic running back and forth behind the sheep. She held both the BC1 and general herding title TO1, and competed in class 2 in both types of trials.

Oona’s temperament was very much my ideal, which is why I wanted a pup from her. She was friendly, cheerful, active, balanced, and pressure-tolerant. If the handler didn’t know what they were doing, Oona could outsmart them six ways to Sunday. She required a certain level of authority to work well, but didn’t take harsh corrections personally. You could apply a lot of pressure without her attitude changing. She was also stable with sounds and surfaces – she lived in an area where gunfire was common year-round due to bird and hare hunting. I saw Oona when I picked up Riite, and she was wonderfully calm and sensible, even at a busy airport.

Oona had HD A, ED 0, and clear eyes. She lived a healthy life until she contracted leptospirosis at six years old and, despite treatment, passed away. In fact, Blue Boy also died of leptospirosis.

Oona’s sire, Leo, was purely a working dog. Aside from the basic herding test, he has no official trial results – not even a hip score. Leo is approximately ¾ ISDS-bred, with his dam line coming from French working lines. Leo’s paternal grandsire is Scot Nat Ch Llanfarian Jim (ISDS283346). His maternal grandsire is Brave Craig (ISDS295029), French Nat Ch 2014 and third in Continental Ch in 2015; Craig’s sire was Int Sup Ch Llangwm Bob. Craig’s maternal grandsire was Int Sup Ch Roy (ISDS200199). Leo’s maternal great-great-grandsire was Shark (LOF11510/1609), who placed second in the French Nat Ch three times, was third in Continental Ch in 2007, and was a member of France National herding team at the World Championships three times.

Oona’s dam Maïoc came from the same kind of working stock – the type no one bothered to x-ray. In the fifth generation, Shark appears again, along with three dogs with level 3 herding titles (TO3). In the sixth generation, there’s an interesting American import, Hugh (LOF4055/559), who was both a French Nat Ch and a Herding Working Ch. Also found in the background is Droopy (LOF1976/301), the very first Continental Champion back in 1991.

Riite’s pedigree includes nearly all the major French working dog lines. Looking back through it, it quickly becomes clear that dogs like Hugh and Droopy appear again and again. It’s also worth noting that every single French dog in the pedigree has passed the basic herding test.

All of Riite’s siblings have gone to active, hobby-oriented homes.

Her brother Upset has completed the basic herding test (ChBCConf) and the socialization test CSAU. He also competes in truffles in class 2. Herding is his main discipline, but in addition to that and truffle work, he also trains in agility and hoopers. His x-rays are HD A/A, ED 0/0. Another brother, Uppy ”Youpi”, works as a herding dog on a cattle farm. A third brother, Uith, works with truffles. A fourth brother, Ulysse, has also passed the CSAU and trains in agility and hoopers.

Sister Uguette stayed with the breeder and her primary job is herding. She also trains in agility and recently joined a search and rescue team, where she trains in mantrailing—which includes both wilderness and ID tracking. Her health results are HD A, ED 0, OCD 0. Another sister, Umaï, is purely a working herding dog. She has ChBCConf, and her hips and elbows are unofficially healthy. The third sister, Utah, has passed the CSAU and competes in A2.

The siblings seem to have very similar temperaments. All are cheerful, active, love to work, and are easy dogs in everyday life. All, except for Upset, display a degree of aloofness or indifference toward strangers. None of them are shy or fearful around people, but they’re simply uninterested and feel the need to bark at unfamiliar individuals. Familiar people, on the other hand, are universally adored by all of them.

Among the half-siblings, four have passed the CSAU, two have ChBCConf, two compete in agility, and one is a certified SAR dog. None have had any x-rays or other medical evaluations.

Health issues

This section remains extremely limited, as I have no concrete information on health issues. Riite’s breeder was unaware of any known problems in the close family—neither in Oona’s previous litter nor among Seth’s siblings. So there could potentially be anything in the background, but it’s worth noting that French males seem to be used for breeding even at quite an old age. A good example is Seth’s sire, who was 11 years old when the litter was born, and it was also his only litter. Likewise, Oona’s dam’s sire was 11 years old when Maïoc’s litter was born. So there is documented evidence of long-lived, healthy breeding dogs in the pedigree, which strengthens my belief that French dogs tend to be “generally healthy.” However, this does not eliminate the possibility of serious hereditary illnesses elsewhere in the pedigree.

Zavista

Luonteensa puolesta Zavi on sitä mitä koiralta toivon. Iloinen, aktiivinen, kontaktihakuinen, yhteistyökykyinen, rohkea, kolhunkestävä ja äänivarma, eikä sillä kiehu yli vaikka onkin hyvin intensiivinen ja nopea koira. Se on luustokuvattu kaikin puolin terveeksi (selkä ja lonkat kahdeksan vuotiaina todettu priimaksi INCOCin toimesta), sen silmät on peilattu muutamankin kertaa terveiksi, ja MyDogDNA 196 -setin mukaan se on NCL5, IGS, MDR1, SN, RS, EAOD, BCG ja DM terve, CEA ja TNS kantaja.

Zavi on Kajan mukaan varsin täydellinen koira. Niin harrastuksissa kuin kotonakin. Se on kaikin puolin helppo ja vaivaton, mutta intensiivisyytensä vuoksi ei joka käteen sopiva. Vaikka Zavilla on olemassa erinomainen off-nappi, vahvaluontoisena koirana siitä saisi helposti seinille hyppivän kilipään, jos työtä ei tarjoaisi ja rajoja asettaisi. Se ei kyseenalaista tai ole ns tuhma. Päinvastoin, se haluaa tehdä aina oikein ja pitää tassua lipassa kaiken aikaa, mutta kun koira on nopea ja intensiivinen, taitamattomissa käsissä erinomainen koira muuttuu helposti kauheaksi.

Zavi tahtoo tosiaan tehdä aina oikein. Se on urosmaisen putkiaivo, eikä sillä ole tarvetta sooloilla. Se pystyy erinomaisesti itsenäiseen työhön, ja on samaan aikaan äärimmäisen helppo ohjattava. Se ei ota painetta ohjaajasta missään tilanteessa; ei kisoissa, eikä korjauksessa. Sille saa latoa niin fyysistä kuin psyykkistä painetta vaikka kuinka paljon, Ympäristössä saa tapahtua mitä vain, ja sille saa sanoa hyvinkin rumasti, eikä se haittaa sen elämää ollenkaan. Se on myös äärimmäisen rohkea, eikä Kaja muista sen koskaan pelänneen mitään.

Vaikka Zavi on nopea ja kiihkeä, sillä on erinomainen kontrolli kroppaansa, eikä se telo itseään tieten tahtoen. 

Kotona se pötköttelee jossain. Se ei tunge leluja käsiin tai pyydä huomiota, vaan vain oleilee. Sellainen ”ota kaapista, käytä, ja laita takaisin kaappiin” koira. Läheisyyttä Zavi kuitenkin rakastaa, joten yleensä pötköttelykohde on Kajan syli.

Iloisena ja sosiaalisena koirana se tulee toimeen muiden urosten kanssa ongelmitta, samoin kuin kaikkien muidenkin vieraiden koirien. Sille vieraat koirat ovat bordercollietyylisesti hyvin yhdentekeviä. Ihmisiä se rakastaa, ihan kaikenlaisia. Kuulemma ehkä vähän liikaakin.

Zavilla on suuri taistelutahto ja saalisvietti. Se palkkautuu niin sosiaalisesti, leluilla kuin ruoalla, lelun ollessa ykkösjuttu. Leikkii koko kehollaan ja puree hyvin kiinni. Noutaminen on tullut luonnostaan ilman opetusta.

 Ääniä se ei huomaa, ja se on rohkea ja varma kaikenlaisilla alustoilla, eikä se epäröi kiivetä tai hypätä asialta toiselle. Se matkustaa vaivattomasti, ja on joka paikassa kuin kotonaan. Toistoja kestää erinomaisesti, eikä sillä myöskään ole lelujen kyttäämistä, tai mitään muutakaan silmäjumittamista. Tai ylipäänsä bordercollieviirailuja.

Suurimmaksi epäkohdaksi Kaja näkee Zavin äänenkäytön vuoroa radan reunalla odottamassa. Siellä se kiljuu, mutta itse radalla ei. Kuulemma tämä on mitä todennäköisiten Kajan itsensä mokaama juttu, sillä Zavin pennuissa ei ole kiljujia, ja Kaja vaan on antanut ymmärtämättömyyttään Zavin huutaa pienestä pitäen ilman siihen puuttumista.

Agility on Zavin päälaji, ja siinä se kisaa kolmosissa. Se on nopea koira, joka on saanut kiitosta useammalta taholta. Agilityn lisäksi Zavi on kilpaillut dogdivingissä, jossa se sijoittui toiseksi Puolan mestaruudessa vuonna 2024. Se on myös läpäissyt paimentaipumustesti NHAT:in (PAIM-T).

Terveysrintamalla se on ollut hyvin terve elämänsä ajan. Sillä ei ole ollut omituisia eläinlääkärikäyntejä, sen vatsa on kestänyt kaiken mahdollisen, se ei voi pahoin matkatessa, eikä sillä ole allergioita tai yliherkkyyksiä.

Suvusta

Zavi on aika pitkän päälle “agilitysukua”, suvussa ollen pääasiallisesti agilityssa kisaavia tai sitä harrastavia koiria. Varsinkin emon puolelta tulee myös näyttelymenestystä, joka on aika tavalla puolet ja puolet vanhoja brittiläisiä sekä au/nz-linjoja. Voitaisiin karkeasti sanoa Zavin olevan kahdeksannes au/nz-näyttelylinjaa, saman verran brittinäyttelylinjaa, ja loput kolme neljästä työlinjaa.

Zavin isä Jamie from Thircan’s Dream on kisannut agilityn kolmosissa, niin agi- kuin hyppyradoilla, ja osallistunut useisiin arvokisoihin elämänsä aikana, aina MM ja EO -karsinnoista paikallisiin saksalaisiin cupeihin. Suuremmissa arvokisoissa Jamie ei ole mitalisijoille päässyt, mutta menestystä on niitetty Bavarian ja Saksan DHV:n mestaruudessa, sekä Saxonian, Tabalugan ja Bayerwaldin cupeissa. Agilitysta se eläköityi vasta kymmenvuotiaana. Paimenessa se on käynyt muutamia kertoja, ja on väläytellyt siellä oikein hienoja ajatuksia.

Jaimen omistajan Julian kertoman mukaan, Jaime on hyvin samankaltainen luonne kuin poikansa. Se on aina valmis töihin, palkkautuu kaikella, on sosiaalinen niin koirien kuin ihmisten kanssa, sillä on vahva, painetta kestävä luonne, ja se osaa rauhoittua kotona. Sitä kuvaillaan pelleksi, ja vielä näin kaksitoista vuotiaana Julia sanoo sen olevan täydessä timmissä.

Sen täyssisaruksista Jill kisaa/on kisannut tokossa EVLissä, ja sisko Jenna agilityssä ja hyppyradoilla kummassakin kolmosluokassa.

Jaimen isä, Zavin isoisä, puolestaan on Eiri Greme Ray, joka on ollut ilmeisen pidetty koira. Se on niin ikään kisannut niin agissa kuin hyppyradoilla kolmosissa. Omistajansa Tanja kertoo uroksen olevan unelmakoiransa; järkevä, tasapainoinen, sosiaalinen niin koirien kuin ihmisten kanssa, yrittää aina parhaansa, ja kuuntelee hyvin myös korkeassa vireessä. Myös Ray on vahva luonne, josta löytyy pellen vikaa.

Jaimen emo, Zavin isoäiti, on pähkähullu Gracey in Red from Thircan’s Dream. Sanaa “crazy” Cathrin tosiaan käyttää useasti narttua kuvaillessaan. Gracey on aina tassu lipassa valmiina toimimaan, se on erittäin aktiivinen ja vilkas, äärimmäisen itsevarma, luottavainen, ja kaikkea ja kaikkia rakastava. Se ei ilmeisesti ole koskaan kisannut missään, mutta on harrastanut aikanaan agilitya.

Kauempana Jaimen takaa löytyy neljännestä polvesta Brittein saarilla titteleitä ansainneet koirat Jos ISDS 152124, Int Sup Wisp ISDS 161487, ja Spot ISDS 212262. Siellä on myös GB MVA Brooksbid Country Classic, sekä DE JMVA & MVA Detania Panja’s Flash, jolla on myös BH A3. Graceyn isä on BH AD A3 Rosmarinus The Jongelar, ja emo BH A1 Cheeky in Blue from the Narrow Lane. Cheekyn kummallakin vanhemmalla on BH A3.

Zavin emo Radocha Forest Land Chilabo “Lilou” on kuvailun mukaan myös samankaltainen kuin poikansa. Lilou on ollut hoidossa Zavin omistajan Kajan luona muutamaan otteeseen useamman viikon putkeen, ja Kaja kertoo Liloun olleen hyvin ongelmaton, äärimmäisen sosiaalinen ja kaiken kaikkiaan helppo narttu. Myös se kestää hyvin painetta, eikä ympäristö sitä liikuta. Se on ehkä hieman impulsiivisempi, ja odottamiset ovat sille vaikeita, mutta kotona se on kuitenkin rauhallinen, hyvän off-napin koira. 

Lilou on kisannut agilityssa ykkösissä, ja on treenannut tämän lisäksi hieman tokoa, frisbeetä ja paimennusta, jossa se on yllättävän tyylikäs ollakseen noin neljännes näyttis.

Liloun isästä, Zavin isoisästä, M’Halny Forest Land Chilabo “Fuks”ei valitettavasti ole oikeastaan ollenkaan tietoja saatavilla. Se on kuitenkin treenannut aikanaan frisbeetä, ei tietoa onko kisannut siinä. 

Liloun emo, Zavin isoäiti, Red Hot Chilli Pepper Energizer “Jill” on kisannut paimennuksessa ykkösluokassa. Se on ollut periksiantamaton, nopea ja kuuliainen, hyvin sosiaalinen koira, jolla on ollut hyvä off-nappi. Sitä on kuvailtu täydelliseksi farmikoiraksi. Jillin selkeästi huonoin puoli on ollut ukkospelko, joka tosin ei ole haitannut silloin kun ollaan paimenessa.

Tältä puolen sukua tulee enemmän muotovaliota. Fuksin isä on PL MVA, ja se on kisannut paimennuksessa ykkösluokassa. Jillin kumpikin vanhempi ovat myös PL MVA. Liloun neljännessä polvessa 6/8 on joko JMVA tai MVA, yksi multimuotovaliokin sieltä löytyy.

Suorilla sukulaisilla ei tosiaan ole kuin vain agility- tai näyttelytuloksia, mutta lähisukulaisilla löytyy tuloksia myös tokosta, pelastuksesta, vesipelastuksesta ja suojelusta. Kaksi Liloun sisaruspuolta emonsa kautta toimivat pelastuskoirina. Kaksi sisaruspuolta, yksi Jillin ja yksi Fuksin puolelta, kisaavat suojelussa. Fuksilla taas on kuusi sisarpuolta, jotka toimivat pelastuskoirina.

Kaikki Zavin pentuelaiset ovat agilitykoiria. Veli Uncharted Treasure “Quick” asuu Puolassa ja kisaa agilityssa kakkosissa, se on suorittanut NHATin (PAIM-T), ja se hyppelee myös frisbeen kanssa. Sisko Unique Trinity “Tri” asuu Saksassa, ja on agilityssa kolmosluokassa. Toinen sisko Up to Galaxy Dust “Bju” asuu myös Puolassa, ja treenaa agilitya ja frisbeetä.

Puolisisaruksista kummankin vanhemman puolelta tehdään ensisijaisesti agilitya. Osa tekee frisbeetä. Ja kuten aiemmin todettua, 21 sisarusta ovat HD A/A, ED 0/0, OCD terve/terve (yhtä lukuunottamatta), ja osalta on myös selkä ja silmät tutkittu terveiksi.

Sairauksista

Lähisuku on ollut hyvin tervettä. Jamiella on 17 pentua, joista kaikki ovat HD A ja ED 0. 12x myös OCD terve. Liloulla taas on 18 pentua, joista 15x HD A, 1x HD B, 16x ED 0, 5x OCD terve, sekä valitettavasti yksi OCD sairas. Jamien tai Liloun pennuilla ei ole raportoitu esiintyneen autoimmuunisairauksia, ruoansulatushäiriöitä tai epilepsiaa.

Epilepsia

Jos kuitenkin kauemmaksi katsotaan, alkaa ilmestyä varsinkin epilepsiaa. Rayllä on ilmeisesti vain kaksi pentua jättänyt epilepsiaa; Flyland Nothing’s Impossible, jolla epipentu Flyland Niji isänä NNL M’Yama no Arashi, sekä Ambassador Bohemia Grant, jolla kolme epipentua samasta yhdistelmästä, emona Aisknekht Peppy Spark.

Rayn täysveli Eiri Greme Moss on ainakin kahdeksan epileptikon isoisä. Rayn about 3/4 veli Gwen (sama emo, Gwenin isänisä on Rayn isä) on jättänyt kaksi epileptikkoa, Jago vom Sonnigen Garten, emonsa Kim Gulden Land, sekä Mawlch Woolien, emonsa Mawlch Lynn. Ilmeisesti Woolien kohdalla on kuitenkin ollut jonkinlaista vääntöä siitä, onko koiralla epilepsiaa vaiko ei.

Sitten on vielä Rayn isä Gleann’s Zell. Ilmeisesti uroksella on suoria epileptikkojälkeläisiä, tai sitten tämä on vain sitkeä huhu jota kuulee sieltä sun täältä. Se, montako epileptisiä jälkeläisiä on, ja onko ne suoria jälkeläisiä vaan vaikkapa pennunpentuja, siitä ei ole mitään hajua. Mistään ei löydy tietoja, kukaan ei tunnu tietävän varmasti mitään, joten tältä osin epiperiyttäjästatus jää hämärän peittoon.

Graceyn isä Rosmarinus The Jongelar on jättänyt yhden epileptikon, Moptopia’s Hot Chocolate, emonsa Moptopia’s Dream of Lilac Time. Kyseisen koiran täysveli Moptopia’s Head over Heels on isoisänä, täten Jongelar on iso-isoisänä epileptikolle Sallitun Turmiollinen Thure, isänsä Tending Glint.

Mainittavaa on, että Jongelarin isä Rosmarinus The Werryman on useamman epileptikon takana. Myös Jongelarin emo, Rosmarinus Raven, on jättänyt yhden epileptikon, ja kyseisen epileptisen koiran täyssisarus on jättänyt myös epilepsiaa. Jongelar on siis kohtalainen epilepsiariskikoira, joskin sillä myös on yhdeksän pentuetta, joista tosiaan vain yhdellä on ilmennyt epilepsiaa. Se on jättänyt kaksi E-lonkkaista ja yhden D-lonkkaisen eri yhdistelmiin.

Emo Cheeky puolestaan on isoäitinä epileptikko Jolly Agile Flying Flowlle, isänä Flynntastic Red Jaff of Tarnforce, emona Akiila  Blue Heavens from Thircan’s Dream, jonka emo Cheeky siis on.

Liloun puolelta vain sen isoisä Hector Czechmate on isoisänä yhden koiran, Blue Bricassart True Friend, isänä Highlander Tennant ja emona Laponia z Porzadnej Podziny, jonka isä puolestaan on Hector. Toki on mahdollista, että muitakin epileptikkoja suvussa on, mutta niistä ei löydy tietoja mistään. Mainittavaa tosin on, että Liloun isoäidin Baby Brown Gasko Primin isä, Roy of Dalmillington, on myös useamman epileptikon takana. Sillä ei minun tietojen perusteella ole itsellä yhtään epipentua, ja vain kolme epileptistä pennunpentua (Royta on käytetty paljon). Sen sijaan se on kauempana sukutaulussa useiden koirien takana.

Näkisin, että isoin epiriski on Zavin isälinjassa, ja mahdollisesti emon puoli on tasoittanut epiriskiä suuresti. Tämän päätellen siitä, ettei Zavilla ole itsellä yhtään epileptikkopentua tai pennunpentua. Koen, ettei Zavilla ole kohonnutta riskiä epilepsian periyttämiseen – sillä teoriassa pitäisi olla jo sairastunut pentu/pentuja, jos sen riski sairauden jättämiseen olisi keskiarvoa korkeampana.

OCD

Zavilla on kolme OCD-pentua; Pikkutiira, Lunni ja Kuikka, emona Ilmiliekin Kettu. Loput 32 kuvattua ovat terveitä. Jamiella ei ole yhtään OCD-sairasta pentua, mutta Liloulla on yksi, kuten edellä todettua: Luca Sonic Workaholic, isänsä Remarkable Zen Garden Sonic Workaholic.

Kaksi Zavin pentua Sonic Workaholicin Z-pentueesta (emona Fru is Workaholic), on jättänyt OCD:ta. Zero Distraction Sonic Workaholic yhdessä Avoid Zlatan Full of Rushin kanssa on jättänyt oireettomat OCD-sairaat/tulkinnanvaraiset Foxtrick Zapping Lightning ja Foxtrick Zapping Star. Zero Zero Seven SW taas on jättänyt yhdessä Deana Tora Mein kanssa OCD-sairaan Addicted to Alkyran, ja yhdessä Ibalgin Qweahy Family Geluzeen kanssa OCD-sairaan Novalgin Ibaze Ex Family Geluzeen.

Kaksi muuta Sonic Workaholicin Z-pentuelaista ovat myös tehneet pentueet, ja niissä taas ei ole ilmennyt OCD:ta. Kirjoitushetkellä Zavilla on kolme vielä pennunpentuetta, joissa vanhempana on koira muusta kuin Sonic Workaholicin Z-pentueesta, ja myös niissä kaikki pennut ovat terveitä.

Zavin täysveli Uncharted Treasure Sonic Workaholic on jättänyt ilmeisesti vain kaksi OCD-sairasta pentua yhteen pentueeseen; Chance to Dance ja Cherokee Indiana Storytelling, emona Dinadin Storytelling. Myös tällä uroksella on useampi täysin terve pentue.

Ray on isoisovanhempana yksittäisille koirille, Gracey on isovanhempana Vayana from Thircan’s Dreamille, Jongelar on isoisänä Oman Polun Lapin Joikulle poikansa Moptopia’s Head over Heelsin kautta, ja myös isoisoisänä kyseisen uroksen kautta kahdelle Sallitun pennulle.

Lilou on edellä mainitun yhden sairaan pennun, sekä kahden SW U-pentueen poikansa lisäksi isoäitinä tyttärensä Northern Light Sonic Workaholic kautta Triforce Another Castlelle, isänään Promillen Indigo-Go Martin. Sekä isoisoäitinä koiralle Triforce Kamehameha.

Baby Brown Gasko Primillä on yksi sairas pentu, Bright Side of Life Tan Energizer, isänä Glad with You Gasko Prim. Hector on isoisänä kolmelle pennulle, ja isoisoisänä yhdelle.

Ja huomautan vielä lopuksi, että tapauksia on aivan varmasti enemmän, ne vaan on piilotettu.

Näillä tiedoilla näkisin, että Zavin puolelta tulee suurempi riski OCD:hen kuin epilepsiaan. Mutta koska Zavin pentuja ei vielä ole suuremmin käytetty jalostukseen, on aina mahdollista, että nimenomaan Sonic Workaholicin Z-pentue on saanut geenilotossa huonot numerot. Todennäköistä kuitenkin on, että Zavin omat pennut ovat terveitä, jatkojalostus voi olla toinen asia.

About Zavi

In terms of temperament, Zavi is everything I hope for in a dog. Cheerful, active, eager for contact, cooperative, brave, resilient, and soundproof—he never boils over despite being an intense and fast dog. He has been X-rayed and found structurally healthy in every way (his spine and hips were evaluated excellent at eight years old by INCOC). His eyes have been examined multiple times and found healthy, and according to the MyDogDNA 196 panel, he is clear of NCL5, IGS, MDR1, SN, RS, EAOD, BCG, and DM, and a carrier of CEA and TNS.

According to Kaja, Zavi is a nearly perfect dog—both as a working partner and at home. He’s easygoing and effortless in every way, though due to his intensity, he’s not suitable for just anyone. While Zavi has an excellent ”off switch,” his strong personality means that without mental stimulation and boundaries, he could easily become a hyperactive nuisance. He’s not defiant or “naughty”—quite the opposite. He always wants to do the right thing and metaphorically keeps a paw at salute, but because he’s so fast and intense, an inexperienced handler could easily turn a fantastic dog into a nightmare.

Zavi genuinely wants to do things right.. He’s perfectly capable of working on his own while also being extremely easy to handle. He never feels pressure from the handler—neither in competition nor during corrections. You can apply as much physical or mental pressure as you want, the surroundings can be chaotic, and you can even use harsh words—it doesn’t faze him at all. He’s also extremely brave, and Kaja can’t recall him ever being afraid of anything.

Though Zavi is fast and driven, he has excellent body awareness and doesn’t intentionally injure himself.

At home, he lounges somewhere quietly. He doesn’t shove toys into your hands or beg for attention—he simply relaxes. He’s the type of dog you “take out of the cupboard, use, and put back in.” That said, he loves affection and usually chooses Kaja’s lap as his lounging place.

As a cheerful and social dog, he gets along well with other males and any unfamiliar dogs. Like a typical border collie, strange dogs are pretty much irrelevant to him. He loves people—all kinds of people—perhaps even a bit too much, according to some.

Zavi has a strong tug drive and he loves to play with his full body. He is motivated by social rewards, toys, and food—with toys being his top choice. He plays with his whole body and bites down firmly. Retrieving has come naturally to him, without being taught.

He’s indifferent to sounds, and he’s confident and sure-footed on all surfaces. He doesn’t hesitate to climb or jump from one object to another. He travels easily and feels at home wherever he goes. He tolerates repetition well and doesn’t show obsessive behavior with toys or any other form of “eye lock” behavior—no typical border collie quirks at all.

Kaja sees Zavi’s biggest flaw as his vocalization while waiting on the sidelines before his turn on a course. He screams there—but not on the course itself. Apparently, this is most likely Kaja’s own mistake: none of Zavi’s offspring are screamers, and Kaja unknowingly allowed the behavior from an early age without intervening.

Agility is Zavi’s main sport, and he competes at the class 3. He is a fast dog and has received praise from multiple sources. In addition to agility, Zavi has competed in dog diving, where he placed second in the Polish Championship in 2024. He has also passed the NHAT herding instinct test.

In terms of health, Zavi has been very healthy throughout his life. He has never needed odd vet visits, his stomach tolerates everything, he doesn’t get carsick, and he has no allergies or sensitivities.

His pedigree

Zavi comes from what could be described as a primarily “agility” lineage, with most dogs in the pedigree either competing in or actively training agility. On his dam’s side, there’s also a notable presence of show success, being roughly half-and-half between older British and AU/NZ show lines. Roughly estimated, Zavi is one-eighth AU/NZ show line, one-eighth British show line, and the remaining three-quarters working line.

Zavi’s sire, Jamie from Thircan’s Dream, competed at A3 in both agility and jumping, participating in several major championships during his lifetime—from World Championship and European Open qualifiers to local German cups. While Jamie didn’t reach the podium in major international events, he did achieve success in the Bavarian and German DHV Championships, as well as in regional events like the Saxonian, Tabalugan, and Bayerwald Cups. He only retired from agility at the age of ten. Jamie has also had some herding experience, during which he showed moments of excellent instinct.

According to his owner Julia, Jamie’s temperament is very similar to his son’s. He is always ready to work, motivated by everything, social with both people and dogs, mentally strong and pressure-tolerant, and calm at home. Julia describes him as a bit of a clown, and even at twelve years old, she says he’s still in excellent shape.

Among Jamie’s full siblings, Jill has competed in obedience at OB3 class, and Jenna in agility and jumping, both at class 3.

Jamie’s sire—Zavi’s paternal grandsire—is Eiri Greme Ray, who was reportedly a very well-liked dog. He too competed at class 3 level in agility and jumping. According to his owner Tanja, Ray is her dream dog: sound, balanced, social with people and dogs alike, always does his best, and listens well even when on a high drive. Ray also had a strong and clownish personality.

Jamie’s dam—Zavi’s paternal grandmother—is the wonderfully lunatic Gracey in Red from Thircan’s Dream. The word “crazy” is something owner Cathrin uses frequently when describing her. Gracey is always ready to go, very active and lively, supremely confident, trusting, and loving toward everyone and everything. Apparently, she never competed officially, but agility was her hobby.

Going further back, Jamie’s fourth-generation ancestors include titled dogs from the British Isles such as Jos ISDS152124, Int Sup Wisp ISDS161487, and Spot ISDS212262. Also found in the background are GB CH Brooksbid Country Classic and DE JMVA & CH Detania Panja’s Flash (who also had BH A3). Gracey’s sire was BH AD A3 Rosmarinus The Jongelar, and her dam was BH A1 Cheeky in Blue from the Narrow Lane. Both of Cheeky’s parents had BH A3.

Zavi’s dam, Radocha Forest Land Chilabo “Lilou”, is also reported to be very similar in character to her son. She has stayed with Zavi’s owner Kaja for several weeks at a time, and Kaja describes her as extremely easy, very social, and overall a trouble-free female. She is pressure-tolerant and unaffected by her surroundings. She may be slightly more impulsive, and waiting is hard for her, but she is still calm at home with a good off-switch.

Lilou competed in agility at class 1 and also trained a bit in obedience, frisbee, and herding—where she showed surprisingly good style, especially for a dog that’s about one-quarter show lines.

Unfortunately, very little is known about Lilou’s sire (Zavi’s maternal grandsire), M’Halny Forest Land Chilabo “Fuks”. He reportedly trained frisbee, but it’s unclear whether he ever competed.

Lilou’s dam—Zavi’s maternal grandmother—Red Hot Chilli Pepper Energizer “Jill”, competed in herding at class 1. She was determined, fast, obedient, highly social, and had an excellent off-switch. She was described as the perfect farm dog. Her main weakness was fear of thunderstorms, although this never affected her during herding.

This side of the family brings more conformation titles. Fuks’ sire was a PL CH and has also IHT-1. Jill’s parents were both PL CH as well. In Lilou’s fourth generation, six out of eight dogs are either JCHs or CHs, including one multi-champion.

Direct ancestors mostly have results in agility or conformation, but close relatives also show achievements in obedience, SAR, water rescue, and protection. Two of Lilou’s maternal half-siblings work as SAR dogs. Two others—one from Jill’s line and one from Fuks’ line—compete in protection. Fuks has six half-siblings who work as SAR dogs.

All of Zavi’s littermates are agility dogs. His brother Uncharted Treasure “Quick” lives in Poland and competes in agility at level 2. He has passed the NHAT and also enjoys playing frisbee. His sister Unique Trinity “Tri” lives in Germany and competes in agility at level 3. Another sister, Up to Galaxy Dust “Bju”, also lives in Poland and trains in both agility and frisbee.

Among the half-siblings from both the dam’s and sire’s side, agility is the primary discipline. Some also participate in frisbee. As previously mentioned, 21 of the siblings have health results of HD A/A, ED 0/0, and are OCD clear (except for one). Some have also had their spines and eyes examined and found to be healthy.

Health issues

Health-wise, the immediate family has been very healthy. Jamie has 17 offspring, all of whom have HD A and ED 0; 12 are also OCD-clear. Lilou has 18 offspring, with 15x HD A, 1x HD B, 16x ED 0, 5x OCD-clear, and unfortunately one diagnosed with OCD. None of Jamie’s or Lilou’s pups have been reported to suffer from autoimmune diseases, digestive disorders, or epilepsy.

Epilepsy

Looking further back in the pedigree, epilepsy begins to appear more frequently. Ray has apparently sired only two pups who have left epilepsy: Flyland Nothing’s Impossible, whose epileptic pup Flyland Niji was sired by NNL M’Yama no Arashi, and Ambassador Bohemia Grant, who produced three epileptic offspring from the same combination with Aisknekht Peppy Spark as the dam.

Ray’s full brother, Eiri Greme Moss, is the grandsire of at least eight dogs with epilepsy. Ray’s approximately ¾ brother Eiri Greme Gwen (same dam, and Gwen’s sire’s sire is also Ray’s sire) has produced two epileptic dogs: Jago vom Sonnigen Garten, out of Kim Gulden Land, and Mawlch Woolien, out of Mawlch Lynn. In Woolien’s case, there has apparently been some debate about whether the dog truly had epilepsy or not.

Ray’s sire, Gleann’s Zell, is also occasionally mentioned in connection with epilepsy. There are rumors that he has produced epileptic offspring directly, but it’s unclear whether these are his immediate progeny or further down the line. No concrete information has been found, and no one seems to know for sure, so whether Zell is truly a producer of epilepsy remains uncertain.

Rosmarinus The Jongelar, Gracey’s sire, has produced one known epileptic dog: Moptopia’s Hot Chocolate, out of Moptopia’s Dream of Lilac Time. That dog’s full brother, Moptopia’s Head over Heels, is the grandsire (making Jongelar the great-grandsire) of the epileptic dog Sallitun Turmiollinen Thure, whose sire is Tending Glint.

It is worth noting that Jongelar’s sire, Rosmarinus The Werryman, appears behind several epileptic dogs. Jongelar’s dam, Rosmarinus Raven, also produced an epileptic offspring, and a full sibling of that epileptic dog has in turn produced epileptic progeny. So Jongelar represents a moderate risk in terms of epilepsy, though he had nine litters and epilepsy appeared in only one of them. He has also produced two dogs with HD E and one with HD D, in different combinations.

On the maternal side, Cheeky is the grandmother of the epileptic Jolly Agile Flying Flow, whose sire is Flynntastic Red Jaff of Tarnforce and dam Akiila Blue Heavens from Thircan’s Dream — the latter being a daughter of Cheeky.

On Lilou’s side, only her grandsire Hector Czechmate appears as the grandsire of one epileptic dog, Blue Bricassart True Friend, whose sire is Highlander Tennant and dam Laponia z Porządnej Podzińy, herself a daughter of Hector. It’s of course possible that other epileptic dogs exist on that side, but no data is available. It is worth mentioning, however, that Roy of Dalmillington, sire of Lilou’s grandmother Baby Brown Gasko Prim, appears multiple times behind epileptic dogs in various pedigrees. Based on available information, Roy himself didn’t produce any direct epileptic offspring, and only three epileptic grandpups (despite having been widely used). Instead, he appears further back in the ancestry of several epileptic dogs.

In my opinion, the greatest epilepsy risk lies on Zavi’s paternal side. The dam line may have balanced this risk considerably — based on the fact that Zavi himself has not produced any epileptic offspring or grand-offspring. I believe Zavi does not carry an elevated risk of passing on epilepsy — if he did, one would expect to have already seen at least one affected pup, given average risk factors.

OCD

Zavi has produced three offspring with OCD in the same litter: Pikkutiira, Lunni and Kuikka, out of Ilmiliekin Kettu. The remaining 32 x-rayed offspring are healthy. Jamie has not produced any offspring with OCD, while Lilou has one, as previously mentioned: Luca Sonic Workaholic, sired by Remarkable Zen Garden Sonic Workaholic.

Two of Zavi’s offspring from the Sonic Workaholic Z-litter (dam Fru is Workaholic) have themselves produced OCD cases. Zero Distraction Sonic Workaholic, together with Avoid Zlatan Full of Rush, produced two OCD-affected dogs with asymptomatic or ambiguous symptoms: Foxtrick Zapping Lightning and Foxtrick Zapping Star. Zero Zero Seven SW sired OCD affected pups Addicted to Alkyra (dam Deana Tora Mein) and Novalgin Ibaze Ex Family Geluzee (dam Ibalgin Qweahy Family Geluzee).

Two other dogs from the Sonic Workaholic Z litter have also had litters of their own, and none of those litters has shown signs of OCD. At the time of writing, Zavi has three more grand-litters where the other parent is from outside the Sonic Workaholic Z litter, and all the puppies in those litters are also healthy.

Zavi’s full brother, Uncharted Treasure Sonic Workaholic, has apparently produced only two OCD-affected puppies, both from the same litter: Chance to Dance and Cherokee Indiana Storytelling, Dinadin Storytelling as the dam. This male also has multiple fully healthy litters.

Ray appears as a great-grandparent of individual dogs. Gracey is the granddam of Vayana from Thircan’s Dream. Jongelar is the grandsire of Oman Polun Lapin Joiku through his son Moptopia’s Head over Heels, and also a great-grandsire via the same male for two Sallitun dogs.

Lilou, in addition to her one affected offspring and two producer sons from the SW U-litter, is the granddam of Triforce Another Castle via her daughter Northern Light Sonic Workaholic (sire Promillen Indigo-Go Martin), and the great-granddam of Triforce Kamehameha.

Baby Brown Gasko Prim has one OCD-affected pup, Bright Side of Life Tan Energizer, sired by Glad with You Gasko Prim. Hector is the grandsire of three affected dogs, and great-grandsire of one.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that there are almost certainly more cases, just hidden or unreported.

Based on this information, I believe the risk of OCD from Zavi’s side is higher than that of epilepsy. However, since Zavi’s offspring haven’t yet been widely used for breeding, it’s still possible that the Sonic Workaholic Z-litter simply got unlucky in the genetic lottery. Still, it seems likely that Zavi’s direct offspring are healthy — but further generations might tell a different story.

Omat pennut

Zavilla on tosiaan miljoona pentua, ainakin 63. Näistä 17 on alle vuoden, viimeisimmät seitsemän syntyneet huhtikuussa 2024. Valtaosa vanhemmista pennuista on kuvattu, ja tulokset ovat

• HD: 34 kuvattua pentua: 28x A, 1x A/B, 4x B, 1x OFA-good, 6x välikuvat ok

Eli kuvattu terveys on äärimmäisen hyvää. Kysyessäni pentujen yleisestä terveydentilasta, siellä ei ole ilmentynyt kenelläkään ruoansulatusongelmia tai yliherkkyyksiä. Yleisesti ottaen pennut ovat hyväpäisiä, ja perineet todella vahvasti isänsä luonnetta. Ne ovat aktiivisia, rohkeita, tasapainoisia ja yhteistyöhaluisia koiria. Luonnollisesti näissäkin on eroja suuntaan ja toiseen, mutta yleiskuva on ilmeisen yhtäläinen.

Valtaosa pennuista on mennyt tekemään agilitya ja/tai frisbeetä. Useampi tekee myös paimennusta ja pelastusta, sekä tokoa ihan EVL-tasolla. Yksi pentu on vankilassa huumekoirana. Pentuja on pitkin Eurooppaa, ja uusin pentue on syntynyt Yhdysvalloissa.

His offspring

Zavi has a million puppies, or at least 63. Of these, 17 are under a year old, with the most recent litter of seven born in April 2024. The majority of the older puppies have been x-rayed, and the results are as follows:

• HD (hips): 34 offspring x-rayed — 28x A, 1x A/B, 4x B, 1x OFA good; 6x prelim clear
• ED (elbows): 34 offspring x-rayed — all 0/0; 6x prelim clear
• OCD: 29 offspring x-rayed — all clear; 5x prelim ok; 3x prelim OC
• Spine: 23 x-rayed — 9x normal spine; 14x LTV0, 3x VA0; 4x prelim clear
• Other: Knees — 9x 0/0
  

In other words, the x-rayed health results are extremely good. When I asked about the puppies’ general health, no issues such as digestive problems or sensitivities had emerged. Overall, the puppies have sound temperaments and have very strongly inherited their sire’s character. They are active, confident, balanced, and cooperative dogs. Naturally, there are individual differences, but the general impression is consistently positive.

The vast majority of the puppies have gone on to do agility and/or frisbee. Several are also involved in herding, search and rescue, and obedience — including OB3 class. One puppy works as a drug detection dog in a prison. The offspring are spread throughout Europe, and the newest litter was born in the United States.
